Zirconium Crowns for Kids

Young red headed girl with pigtails smiling in dental chairAt Dr. Angela Wandera & Associates, we will always try to prevent dental problems before they occur. Unfortunately, many children need some form of restorative treatment due to tooth decay or gum disease. Significant damage or tooth decay may even require the placement of a dental crown.

Thanks to improvements in technology, technique, and materials, there are more dental crown options than ever before. While stainless stain is still a common option for primary (baby) teeth, we now offer zirconium crowns as well. Zirconium is a ceramic compound that is both durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Reasons for Child Dental Crowns

The underlying goal of all dental crowns is to save a tooth from extraction or tooth loss. However, we may recommend a crown for a variety of reasons. The most common reasons include:
•  Severe tooth decay
•  Protecting a damaged tooth from breaking
•  Restoring a worn down or broken tooth
•  Covering a chipped, cracked, or discolored tooth
•  Preventing the premature loss of a primary tooth

An early childhood cavity can cause so much damage that it threatens the life of a primary or baby tooth. While primary teeth eventually fall out, the premature loss of a tooth can create greater complications for your child’s oral health. The most common issues are misaligned or impacted permanent teeth.

If the damage to a primary tooth is severe, a crown may be the only option. Depending on the location of the tooth, we may recommend a zirconium crown to restore its appearance. Dr. Angela Wandera will determine if your child is a suitable candidate for zirconium during a consultation appointment.

Zirconium Crown Procedure

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap that restores the function and aesthetic of the tooth. Most zirconium crowns are prefabricated, meaning the procedure can be completed in a single appointment. During the procedure, we may need to reshape the natural enamel to accommodate the shape and size of the crown.

After the tooth is properly prepared, we use dental cement to bond the restoration to the tooth permanently. Dr. Angela Wandera will choose an appropriately-sized crown that best fits your child’s mouth and prevents malocclusions (misaligned bites). Once the crown is in place, it should prevent the primary tooth from falling out prematurely.

Benefits of Zirconium Crowns

Zirconia has become one of the most popular restorative materials during the last few years, but it is relatively new to pediatric dentistry. We specialize in zirconium crowns due to their many benefits, some of which include:
•  Aesthetics. Like porcelain, zirconia can be molded to match the appearance of natural teeth. It also possesses the same light-reflective properties of tooth enamel. We will choose a shade of zirconia that blends in seamlessly with the rest of their smile.
•  Durability. Besides metal and gold, zirconia is one of the most durable restorative materials available today. We recommend it over porcelain because it possesses the same aesthetic value with better longevity.
•  Biocompatibility. Zirconia is tolerated extremely well by gum tissues, reducing the risk of an allergic reaction.
•  Stain Resistant. Unlike composite resin, zirconia is completely resistant to stains.
•  Metal-free. The alternative, stainless steel crowns, are much less discreet than zirconia. Eliminating metal can also be better for your child’s long-term oral health.
